Galaxy S7 Android 7.0 update now available Rogers, Fido, Videotron, and Telus customers

    Got the update this morning.

Did a reboot, removed SD card, updated, did a cache wipe and reinstalled SD card and everything is perfect after spending over an hour checking everything.

Not a fan of the white washed out look, but love all the optimization settings, especially the blue light removal.

Currently monitoring and logging battery draw. First short term look….Back ground draw is about 1 mAh higher (not bad). I expect on screen draw to be higher than before if I use previous high screen resolution.

    • I.T. Man

I agree especially on the point of the white wash looked. Particularly the drop down notification and settings

    • h2oflyer

But, the positives are looking better… Can’t believe how quick and snappy the phone is and the fingerprint unlock works better and faster…..Might not need the S8.

    • Stephen White

Same here. I was looking to see if there was some way of changing the color but couldn’t (at least for now). It’s really difficult to read.

    • h2oflyer

      UPDATE….On battery consumption.

After real intensive phone use this morning including the update, the battery is down to 32% with 4h 5m of screen on time.

Screen off background draw is 1.8 mAh with phone in deep sleep for 85% of screen off time. Settings are as close as possible to my previous MM settings including high screen resolution.

With 6hr 32m on the battery since full charge, I consider this good out of the gate on Nougat.

    • Creaulx

I’m at 75% with moderate use after 6hrs 11 min on battery. Went to FHD display and took the phone’s advice and dozed 12 unused apps, that’s all. So far, so good…

    • h2oflyer

Glad to see others reporting results on this Rogers Nougat thread as compared to the Bell Nougat thread.

I’m trying to keep everything on the maximum settings….All I do is tap the optimize button occasionally. CPU is averaging 18% use and screen is on high definition between 50-80% brightness level.

    • TheCuddlyKoala

59% after 3hr 16m? That seems REALLY bad.

    • h2oflyer

I realized I had labeled screen current draw wrong as mAh… Changed it to correct %/hr. Doesn’t change 59% in 3h16m.

Not bad at all for very high battery use….High definition, 80% brightness on screen and high CPU use. I now have benchmark to compare normal everyday battery life.

    • Samer S7

That’s good to hear. I’m thinking it’s because we got the Exynos 8890 and the US got the Snapdragon 820. One of the few times we get something better than the US version.

Has anyone on Virgin Mobile Canada received the update yet?

    • Emilio

It’s available. I got it on my S7 last week.

  • Mike F

Received the 7.0 update on my Bell S7 Edge phone (1.2GB)

  • gremlin0007

Anyone get issues with the SD being undecryptable? Says I need to use the phone that encrypted the SD card to decrypt it…. it’s the same phone!!

    • h2oflyer

I did hear of issues with encrypted SD cards which is why I removed mine before update even though it wasn’t encrypted.

You might have to retrieve data from your card through your PC.

    • gremlin0007

wish I had a time machine… Already formatted my card 🙁

  • Hagay Marian

I will wait a couple days to let the early adopters report if there are any issues to further delay the update on my end.

    • gremlin0007

decrypt your SD Card before you update!!

    • GregKorman

I had to re-login to some apps and re-accept some permissions (e.g.: in my banking apps).

Also I had to re-add a contact to my edge panel.

But other than that, so far so good (knocks on wood).

  • Tom.

Did anyone who has updated to Nougat and has their language set as English Canada get google assistant with the update?

    • Stephen B Morris

No. I got it when I had US English and then when I switched it, the assistant went away. But keeping both changed some of the news sources to Canadian focused ones.

    • Andrew King

Did you do anything other than change the language to get Google Assistant? I’ve swapped the language to US English, and still can’t seem to get G.A..Went through the Google App settings, and can’t find a thing…

    • Tom.

After changing the language to US go to Settings > Apps >google app > clear all data and then long pressing the home button should bring up assistant for you

    • Andrew King

Thanks man, I was going a little crazy wondering why I couldn’t get it working. Now time to see if I even want to use it.

  • Samuel Gomez Recuero

This update removed the My places widget and all my previous themes. TouchWiz really did moved a lot of things around.

  • Jon R. Dreger

    sasktel too

    • The update became available for Sasktel customers last week. It even says that in the article

  • Andrew King

Does anyone know how to turn on Google Assistant? I changed the default language to US English, and checked the Google app. No new settings or anything. Did the restart thing just in case that needed a refresh, but still nothing.

  • KiwiBri

hey.. I didnt realise Bell had released it.. hmm

  • TheCuddlyKoala

Only took 7 months for an update. Why is this acceptable?

    • h2oflyer

      Update and let us know.

    • Jonah Emery

Functionally if you own a Samsung flagship you get one major update in the Spring every year.

    • GregKorman

It’s different in a lot of ways from stock Nougat. Im really liking Samsung’s new minimalist aesthetic.

Looks much better than stock (but I’ve never liked how stock Android looks or behaves at all).

Fido s7 edge, after update wifi connection had an exclamation Mark and in wifi screen it would say connected no Internet. After Google search of others having the same issue I had to reboot my router to make internet work again on wifi.

  • h2oflyer

This Nougat update along with a fresh icon pack for Nova has turned my S7 into a “new” phone.

Lots to like with only a couple of dislikes with the UI, but still discovering hidden treats like the device management widget.

Looking forward to much better battery life than before, which was great to begin with. The battery optimization features seem to work. My phone is in deep sleep mode 88% of screen off time only using 0.7% battery per hour.

    • martin

how on earth are you getting 5h 32m screen-on time? Non-rooted, no greenify, no shenanigans? This is impossible. It is very frustrating to read numbers like this when you cannot replicate them. Most people on xda claim much less battery performance, i.e. since the first official update that was applied to the shipped firmware.

      Please, elaborate:
      – are those numbers real?
      – if so, what do you do to reach them? how much attention do you pay to your device’s battery status? greenify, root, etc
      – what do you do with your device, top 3 uses (aka texting, gps, calling, surfing, video playback, music, etc)
      – do you live in a cold or hot environment?
      – what is your carrier and where did you buy your phone?

I used to pay a ton of attention to this, then people tried to convince me my phone only drains so fast cause I keep track of the battery all the time. Changed that, removed all apps such as greenify, gsam, and stopped checking except before plugging it in – same disappointing battery performance.

I agree with all your other points, regarding system stability, smoothness and features.

      Thank you

Here’s today’s battery data….A lot of playing around with Nova and icon settings

    • h2oflyer

This data is after playing around for about 131/2 hrs on battery.

    • Creaulx

I have no hard data, but battery life contributes to improve with Nougat as the OS continues to ask to put unused apps to sleep. The built-in blue light filter and device maintenance settings (which can be added to the home screen) are great. Getting used to the new look. Skipping the S8 entirely.

    • h2oflyer

Overall I like 7.0…Only negative is the washed out pale look of the drop down shade and settings.

I would say that battery performance is approximately the same as before, maybe 10-15% better. I’ve checked carefully using same battery monitoring app ( Accubattery) Nougat probably uses a bit more power than MM but has battery saving features.

      Here’s today’s data

  • h2oflyer

I’m done playing ! Here’s why I love Android. In between Nougat 7.0 and Nova prime and Materialistic icon pack you can customize the crap out of any home page.

    Here’s an example.
