BBM’s premium privacy features are now free to everyone

BBM Stalwarts, rejoice.

Starting today, two of the app’s premium privacy features, Retract and Timer, are available to all users for free. That is, you no longer need a BBM Subscription to use these two particular features.

Retract allows a user to delete a message even after it has been already sent to someone. Like Gmail’s Undo Send option, this feature is designed to allow users to take back a message they sent to a contact by accident or one they no longer want their contact to see.

Timer, on the other hand, adds a user controlled expiry date to a message. Similar to Snapchat, once the timer on a message has run down, it will disappear from both the device it was sent from and the one that received it.

Both these features have been available on BBM since 2014; they’ve also been available on competing chat apps — such as the aforementioned Snapchat — for a number of years.

BlackBerry has also added a number of small improvements to all three versions of BBM. The Android version of the app, for instance, now supports Marshmallow, and adds improved call quality. iPhone and iPad users, on the other hand, can look forward to redesigned main chat window, as well as a new tool for selecting and deleting, retracting or forwarding multiple messages.

Download BBM from BlackBerry World, the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store.
