Google Photos update frees up much-needed phone storage

If you take a lot of photos with a smartphone that has a limited amount of internal storage, you’ll want to download Google Photos if you haven’t already.

The excellent photo management app just added a new feature to help users better manage the space on their smartphones.

The app now has a new “Free up space” button within its settings menu that will delete any photos on your smartphone that have already been uploaded to Google Photos.

With its web client, Google has also added the option for users to downgrade any photos previously uploaded to the service at full resolution to a more svelte compressed format.

Google announced the feature update in a cheeky tweet, which can be seen below.

The new Free up space option is in the process of rolling out on Android, and set to come to iOS in the near future.

Download Google Photos from the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store.
