Sony launches iOS and Android companion apps ahead of PS4 debut

The next generation of game consoles is almost here and Sony is preparing for the launch of its new PlayStation 4 with the release of companion applications for Android and iOS users. This is the app that Sony said would arrive mid- to late-November and while there doesn’t seem to be any real reason for the early launch, it’s nice that it’s here before Friday’s launch.

This app brings with it a few important features including the ability to use your phone as a second screen. Though not supported in all PS4 titles, some games will allow you to use your phone or tablet as a companion device for displaying additional content or information or carrying out smaller in-game challenges. You’ll also be able to use your phone as a remote control for your PS4 provided both devices are on the same WiFi network.

PlayStation App promises access to various PSN features, including viewing profile screens and Trophy accomplishments. You can also exchange messages with other PS4, PS3, and PS Vita systems (as well as other phones and tablets running PlayStation App), browse the official PlayStation website and blogs, purchase content from the PlayStation Store, and watch friends play via livestream.

The PS4 arrives in Canada on Friday, November 15, priced at $399. Download the PlayStation App for iOS and Android here:
