Google looking for someone to help run its Canadian Play Store gift card business

Google launched Play Store gift cards in the United States in an effort to bring retail presence to its mostly ephemeral app store. Apple has found lots of success with this business model, and their iTunes gift cards have been widely available in Canada for many years now. They make great stocking stuffers for Christmas gifts and excellent birthday presents for the younger folks, so it’s no surprise that Google wants in on the action.

A recent Google job posting for a Retail Partner Manager, Gift Cards indicates that the company wants someone  “to lead the marketing and distribution efforts of its gift card business in Australia and Canada,” broadcasting the inevitable addition of the product to drug store shelves near you.

While carriers like Rogers, TELUS and Bell, as well as Samsung, have provided digital Play Store gift cards with select purchases of handsets and tablets, it’s not currently possible to buy them in retail stores.

The job itself will still be located in Mountain View, California, but it’s great to see Google expanding its Play Store gift card availability, even if it doesn’t come with the option to purchase music. Maybe one day, Canada.
