AMEX Canada says more merchants are coming to Apple Pay

American Express Canada (AMEX) has sent Apple Pay users an email stating that in order to complete an update in which new merchants will be added, users need to remove and re-add their AMEX cards to the digital payment platform.

Its an unusual request, but AMEX notes that it is a one-time update and that “future iOS updates and merchant additions will not require you to repeat these steps to re-add your card every time.”

Currently, AMEX is the only credit card available on Apple Pay in Canada, but this may not be the case for long. In fact, iPhone in Canada published a rumour just last week in which a source stated that Apple Pay could soon expand to include Visa and MasterCard by May 10th “barring any unforeseen circumstances.” The source also stated that Apple Pay will be supported by at least two of the big Canadian banks.

TD Canada Trust, Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of Montreal, Scotiabank and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) have all revealed glimpses of Apple Pay pilot programs and plans to institute the new technology. MasterCard also had a purported 2016 roadmap leaked that reveals roll-out plans for Apple Pay in Canada.
