You can now sign up to Periscope with just a phone number

Periscope

Twitter-owned Periscope quickly rose in popularity with a million downloads in its first ten days of release. The company, which aims to be the leader in live streaming, is only currently available on the iPhone, but an Android version has been promised.

Now, six weeks after launch, Twitter has announced a number of new enhancements to Periscope. The most notable improvement in version 1.0.4 is the ability to sign up with a phone number, releasing the need for a Twitter account. In addition, Periscope has now made it easier to reply to comments during a live broadcast where users can tap a comment and hit the reply button. These improvements could significantly help boost the adoption rate and user engagement.

Finally, Periscope notes it has “made a number of performance improvements and squashed tons of bugs,” and now allows users to change their profile picture.

Meerkat, Periscope’s main competitor, recently forged ahead, expanding to Android, which currently shows between 100,000 – 500,000 downloads.
