Disney and Pixar have released the first trailer for the fifth installment in the Toy Story franchise, which shows that technology will be the latest villain in the long-running franchise.
The trailer shows a package being delivered to the house, alongside shots of the toys looking on in fear as a green frog-shaped tablet named Lilypad (played by Greta Lee) displaying the phrase “Hi!” which is followed by the tagline “The age of toys is over?”
This is only a small teaser, so it doesn’t provide much insight into the plot, aside from the fact that smart technology (i.e., tablets) will play the role of the villain. As The Verge’s Jess Weatherbed pointed out, this does play into very real concerns from parents that screen time (mainly tablets and smartphones) is taking the place of more traditional toys and time spent outside.
I add the term ‘smart technology’ because kids getting glued to any screen has been a concern for the last half-century, when Television became a mainstay in North American homes.
Even by the time Toy Story came out in 1995, the Game Boy, which effectively brought home video games on the go, had been out for seven years. Its successor, the Game Boy Pocket, had just been released. Even in the home console market, the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn had been on the market for about a year.
Toy Story 5 is set to hit theatres on June 19, 2026, almost 31 years after the original Toy Story premiered in November 1995.
