Google has updated the Pixel and Pixel XL to feature a new and improved battery status indicator that more accurately calculates remaining battery life.
Previously, the first-generation Pixels would estimate their remaining battery life by looking at recent usage.
For instance, say you only used about 10 percent of your Pixel’s battery per hour over the last several hours, the Pixel would assume, based on that usage, that you would continue to use about 10 percent of its battery every hour.
The issue with that model is that it didn’t factor in periods of peak use, like, for instance, a commute home on public transit in which the user might watch a lot of video.
Moving forward, the Pixel and Pixel XL will instead look at your personal usage patterns during similar days and hours to create a more accurate model.
To see the new battery life estimate, navigate to the battery section of your phone’s settings menu. Note that this change is only new for the first-generation Pixels; it’s been available on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL since they launched earlier this year.
