Game of the Week: Take to the sky with Flight Pilot Simulator

Like many little girls before me, I wanted to be Nancy Drew when I grew up, because she knew how to do everything– from lock picking to ballet. Of all her many skills, however, there was one in particular of which I was especially enamored.

Nancy knew how to fly. Not in some magical Peter Pan way, either. The girl had her pilot’s license. When she needed to, she could hop in the cockpit and just fly away from whatever baddies were in her pursuit.

Ever since those days of Drew-mania, I’ve joined the populous ranks of wannabe pilots, and while I’m still pretty far from achieving that goal any time soon, at least in the meantime I can play Flight Pilot Simulator, one of the top-rated mobile flight sims available.

Your first mission in the game takes you to a landing strip where you learn how to take off, although not how to land (bit of a recipe for disaster there).

To take off, you apply the throttle and tilt your smartphone up as you speed down the runway. Once in the air you can tilt your phone in any direction to steer, dive or climb in order to hit checkpoints. You can also keep track of your radar, speed and brakes.

The more missions you successfully complete, the more money you earn to buy planes other than the little “Cezzna 172” that you’re given to begin with. Like an all black stealth jet fighter, for instance.

It’s not a difficult game. It’s just a bit of simple, mindless fun. Perfect fodder for a lazy long weekend, or really any time you’d prefer your head to be in the clouds.

Flight Pilot Simulator is available for free on both iOS and Android, with in-app purchases.
