Classic SRPG Final Fantasy Tactics arrives on Android

Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy Tactics, one of the Playstation’s all time cult classics, is now available on Android devices.

Originally released in North America in 1998, the Yasumi Matsuno-directed game brought a fresh strategy spin to the already decades old Final Fantasy series.

Technically, this is a re-release of the 2007 Playstation Portable remake of the game called Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. That version of the game added gameplay enhancements, beautiful new cel-shaded cinematics and a new translation that was a significant improvement over the one English speaking territories got in 1998.

This latest re-release brings with it a couple of mobile specific enhancements, as well, including a new touch-based interface that’s perfectly suited to this type of game—anyone that has played the excellent XCOM mobile port will be right at home here—and the ability to use gestures to navigate the game map. Blissfully, the ability to skip cutscenes has also been added to this release, and Square says that loading times are greatly improved, as well.

Of course, as with any Final Fantasy mobile release, you’re going to have to pay the Square Enix tax to get in on the fun. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions is priced at $14.14 on the Play Store. An iOS version of the game has been available since 2011.
