Gartner: Android and iOS “have the usability that consumers enjoy”, takes 62% of smartphone market

Google’s Anrdoid OS is exploding in popularity. When they announced their Q2 results in July they also declared they are seeing 550,000 Android activations every day with over 400 different Android devices around the world. This includes both smartphones and tablets. Big numbers and manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson and Motorola are all the Android bus.

Today Gartner Research came out with another set of stats that showed off Q2 results from the mobile manufacturers. Overall, 16.5% growth over last year (total of 428.7 million phones) and smartphones dominated once again with a stunning lift of 74% growth. Nokia is still king with 22.8% market share, but they fell 8% over the last year. Samsung and LG followed but Apple, now capturing 4.6% of the market, comes in a 4th place. RIM, unfortunately slid down to 6th spot with 3% market share (was at 3.2% last year).

As for the OS, Gartner thinks that Android and iOS will be the winners in the end. Combined Q2 results they make up 61.6% of the smartphone OS (Android has 43.4 and iOS with 18.2). Gartner state that “these two OSs have the usability that consumers enjoy, the apps that consumers feel they need”.
