Upgrade Advisor app suggests Windows 10 Mobile is coming to old Lumia devices sooner than expected

Lumia 640 XL

After delaying updating Windows 8.1 Mobile devices to Windows 10 Mobile partway through last month, it appears Microsoft is narrowing in on when the company will be ready to push the latest version of its OS to older Lumia devices.

On its U.S. app marketplace, the company has uploaded a beta version of an app called Upgrade Advisor. Similar to the tool Microsoft released last year to guide PC owners’ transition to Windows 10, Upgrade Advisor is designed to let those with an 8.1 device know if their smartphone can successfully make the jump to Microsoft’s new OS. “The Windows 10 Mobile Upgrade Advisor app will tell you if your Windows 8.1 phone is eligible for upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile. It can also help free up space on your phone so you’re ready for the upgrade,” says the app’s description.

Upgrade Advisor can’t be downloaded by the public just yet, but some publications like Engadget are speculating anyone will be able to download the app within the next week or so, which likely means a full release of Windows 10 Mobile can’t be far behind.
