Google is celebrating the release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake in a pretty neat way.
If you type Zelda or Ocarina of Time into Google Search, you’ll see a Master Sword icon appear on the bottom right. Upon clicking it, you’ll hear Link’s signature “Hya!” before the TriForce logo appears and the screen transitions to none other than a 90s-themed version of Google Search.
It should be noted, however, that these retro Google Search results for Zelda are limited to a single page, so its actual functionality is minimal. Still, it’s a fun nod to the fact that Ocarina of Time originally debuted on the N64 in 1998. As some social media users have pointed out, it’s also a throwback to a time when search engines were minimalist and, arguably, more functional, free from all of the AI garbage that’s been shoved into them.
The Google easter egg comes just a few days before The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5. It’s a remake that dramatically overhauls the visuals and makes some smaller gameplay tweaks but overall remains highly faithful to the 1998 classic.
In related news, EB Games and Best Buy are both holding midnight launches for Ocarina of Time this week. One of these stores, Toronto’s flagship EB Games on Yonge St., is also now home to Nintendo’s first-ever store-within-a-store in North America.
