A recent study reported that Canadians have an annual budget of $600 for Virtual Reality hardware. While most of the high-end headsets are well above this range, specifically the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Samsung’s Gear VR is currently selling for $110 in Canada. Today, Google has brought its affordable VR option to Canadians.
While available to those in the United States since February 2015, Google Cardboard can now be purchased directly from Google Play Store for $20 CAD, or you can purchase two for $35. This is an inexpensive way to get familiar with the VR experience. Users simply insert your device into the Cardboard headset and Google notes that Cardboard supports most Android or iOS smartphones that have a display between 4 to 6-inches.
Google Cardboard was developed by David Coz and Damien Henry as part of their 20 percent project. While considered a joke to many VR enthusiasts, Cardboard has turned itself into a platform where companies use it to demo new products or experiences, such as the New York Times. In addition, Google Cardboard recently gave sight to a woman for the first time in 8 years and also save young girl’s life.
Google also launched the Works with Cardboard program last year to help developers create VR apps. According to Google, there are now over 1,000 compatible apps and over 5 million Cardboard products have been shipped.
