Sony’s SmartBand 2 lifelogging wearable has a heart rate monitor and an improved design

Sony today unveiled the SmartBand 2, its newest lifelogging wearable which, as expected, comes with a heart rate monitor.

The second-generation fitness tracker keeps the same general design of the original, but adds a new metal clip to make it more fashionable. It also includes LEDs that conveys missed calls, messages, emails, Tweets or Facebook notifications — there is also a subtle vibration — but still missing is an actual display.

In addition to the inclusion of the heart-rate sensor, the Sony SmartBand 2 can also measure stress levels, with all the info recorded and stored in the Sony Lifelog app for iOS or Android.

That lack of a display means the SmartBand 2 will last for two days on a single charge, and fully recharges in an hour. It is waterproof with IP68 certification and is available in black and white at launch, with pink and indigo variants coming sometime later. The SmartBand 2 is compatible with devices running Android 4.4 or higher, or iOS 8.2 or higher.

SmartBand 2 will be available in September in 60 countries, but there is no indication on specific Canadian pricing or a firm release date.
