Google erects gigantic Android billboard in Times Square

Android ad in Times Square

Now that Android Lollipop is available to the masses, Google doesn’t seem to be sparing any expense to get the word out on its prettier, higher-performing OS.

The billboard measures an epic 77 by 323 feet, with a resolution of 2368 by 10048, which is over 20 million pixels. The billboard exhorts New Yorkers to “be together, not the same”; in stations below the billboard, pedestrians can have an Androidified version of their likeness printed on a tee shirt or postcard, while reading inspirational quotes from notable celebrity androids like Whoopi Goldberg.

The diversity vs. sameness message is an obvious strike against the uniform stylings of Apple’s mobile devices. Interestingly, it also strikes a chord similar to the Cupertino company’s older marketing materials, but without the heavy-handedness typical of Apple. It will be interesting to see if the message will resonate with customers in 2014.
