The OnePlus One “Smash You Phone” contest is now over. OnePlus noted on their support forum that they’ll be contacting the 100 winners in the coming days.
Over 140,000 applicants were submitted into this program in the terms and conditions OnePlus stated that the 100 people who were chosen to smash their device must show it suffering “significant and visible damage to qualify for the OnePlus One purchase code. The applicant must show evidence of the damage in the video following the smash.” This caused a bit of backlash from the community as there was really no reason to be so violent and destructive with perfectly good technology.
OnePlus heard the calls and have changed up the contest terms. The winners can now either decide to smash their device, or donate it to charity, specifically towards Medic Mobile.
“OnePlus is a young startup with bold ideas. It’s tough to just survive in this industry, nevermind shake it up as we hope to do. ‘Smash’ reflects our desire to do just that: show the world that there’s something new available, something that just may be better than your current daily driver.”
The OnePlus One will be available to Canadians, via the United States store, and its specs come with a 5.5-inch 1080p display (Gorilla Glass 3), 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, 13MP Sony Exmor sensor (f/2.0, flash, and 4K video), 5MP front-facing camera, JBL-designed stereo speakers and 3100mAh non-removable battery. The cost is $299 (USD) for the 16GB Silk White and 64GB in Sandstone Black is $349.
