TELUS’s Darren Entwistle is stepping down as CEO of the company he has been in charge of for nearly 14 years. An outside hire in 2000, he has turned the telco into the second-largest wireless carrier in Canada, and premiered a number of customer-facing features that have since been emulated by the rest of the industry.
Entwistle, who will be appointed executive chair of TELUS’s board of directors, is being replaced by Joe Natale, another company veteran, currently the Chief Commercial Officer. Under Natale, TELUS became a company famous for its customer-friendly approach, which has resulted in the lower churn among the Big Three.
Natale will take over as CEO on May 8th, during TELUS’s AGM and shortly before the company is set to announce its Q1 results. TELUS is also set to integrate Public Mobile’s subscriber base into Koodo around this time, requiring existing customers to transition from CDMA devices to more modern (and expensive) HSPA+/LTE ones.
TELUS recently announced that smartphone subscribers make up 77% of the company’s postpaid base.
