Google updates smartphone and tablet search with Cards-like interface

Google must be realizing that its mobile bread and butter is still search, because it has given its mobile search component another spit-shine.

Last year the company rolled out native-feeling weather information and currency conversion on its mobile page, and now it is expanding to include a whole lot of other cool stuff. These are presented in Google Now-style Cards, and encompass such categories as: finance, currency conversion, unit conversion, dictionary definitions, local time lookup, and holiday and sunrise times.

Search will also respond to semantic queries such as “How many grams in a pound?” and present the information in an interactive graphical format.

The feature is compatible with smartphones and tablets running Android and iOS, and its language support will expand beyond English in the coming months.
