Lacavera: Blockbuster “closures have not impacted WIND”

WIND Mobile expanded their coverage and opened shop up in the Kitchener-Waterloo area in August. Guelph is also live and soon will Cambridge. The latest stat that gave an indication of subscriber numbers was from the Q2 Orascom Telecom report, showing 317,000 active subscribers. So when the Q3 results come out next month we’ll most likely see an increase in subs, mainly from the new locations but also their $29 back-to-school promo.

One major stumbling block they had to overcome was their “Store-within-a-Store” partnership with Blockbuster. This unfortunately went belly up as Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy and closed their Canadian operations. WIND had over 100 kiosks within BlockBuster, CEO Anthony Lacavera recently stated that “We started thinking about backup plans months ago”. Today on the company blog Lacavera addressed the impact of Blockbuster closing, saying they now have over 500 distribution points and that “only a small percentage were located within Blockbuster stores. We’re continuing to expand and offer more locations to serve our customers all the time and so these closures have not impacted WIND”.

WIND will also be expanding into Peterborough, St. Catharines and Niagara.
