Bell signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Cisco to collaborate on sovereign AI infrastructure for Canada.
According to the companies, the MOU will bring together Bell’s data centres, network, and operations capabilities with Cisco’s AI, security, infrastructure monitoring, and Sovereign Critical Infrastructure (SCI) technology.
SCI is Cisco’s offering for customers who want to run their own on-premises sovereign infrastructure with full control. Initially aimed at Europe, Cisco touts SCI as an option for governments, banks, healthcare providers, and more.
Together, Bell and Cisco aim to help Canadian organizations deploy and manage AI infrastructure in Canada. The companies also want to support sensitive workloads that may have strict security and other requirements.
The companies’ collaboration will focus on building a Canadian platform for sovereign AI, supporting modular AI infrastructure, and developing flexible commercial models that can help customers align cost with how they actually use AI.
This is the latest development in Bell’s ongoing AI push. The telecom giant recently launched a cybersecurity AI model in partnership with Cohere, and earlier this month detailed plans to quadruple capacity of its planned AI data centre hub in Saskatchewan. Further, Bell is working on a larger AI Fabric project that will see data centres constructed in B.C. and beyond.
