Ottawa Police has raked in over $1 million this year from distracted driving charges

The Ottawa Police have declared they’re continuing to educate the public about the dangers of using a mobile device while driving, but are still seeing an increase in those disobeying the law.

So far this year, the Ottawa Police have charged 2,187 drivers with distracted driving, amounting to over $1 million in revenues for the city. However, approximately 25 percent of all those fined opted to go to court to fight the infraction.

“These numbers show that drivers are driving too fast and cell phone use is far too common,” said Ottawa Police Traffic Sergeant Eddy Yeoumans in a statement sent to MobileSyrup. “Drivers need to change driving behaviour and make a conscious choice to drive safe every time they get behind the wheel.”

The Government of Ontario banned the use of an electronic device, including smartphones, tablets, music players and laptops, while driving in 2009. Since September 1st, 2015, anyone caught using an electronic device while driving will be fined a minimum of $490 along with three demerit points.
