When Dandy launched its first crowdsourced app, Picture This, in January, the focus was public photo-based scavenger hunts. A new release today brings an expanded focus on providing event organizers and sponsors a better way to engage with attendees.
The updated Picture This (which also contains a bevy of graphical and performance improvements) now allows event organizers to collect high resolution photography, highlight sponsors, and create private photo challenges for attendees. Attendees that participate can receive prizes, giveaways, coupons, and discounts for their troubles.
Dandy co-founder and CEO Matt Scobel told me that the impetus behind the new feature was the hope of creating a platform that lives on longer than most event apps, which are costly, and become obsolete once the event ends. To ease the transition away from branded event apps, Dandy has given event organizers the ability to control the look and feel of their challenge set, and include relevant web and social links.
For those unfamiliar with Dandy’s crowdsourced development process, here’s how it works: Dandy community members can suggest app ideas and participate in deciding which features get built. Community members can also contribute to the design and development of the app, with each member receiving a revenue share based upon their level of contribution. While Dandy community member Niger Little-Poole had the initial idea for the Picture This app, it was Derek Lebert, co-founder of Blog Three Brewery in St. Jacobs, ON, who suggested private photo challenges for events.
It’s no surprise that the feature additions chosen by the community was one that can provide it with a revenue stream, but the gap Dandy is looking to fill is real. Dandy is now testing Picture This’ new event-based features around the Kitchener-Waterloo region, so give the app a try if you’re attending the KW Summer Lights Festival, Steel Rails Sessions, In Running Colour, Grand Porch Party, KOI Festival, or Taco Fest (Picture This will begin to feature events outside of Waterloo in August).
