BlackBerry 10 will come to PlayBook, say RIM

RIM’s year-old BlackBerry PlayBook will receive BlackBerry 10 when it’s ready, says a senior executive of the company.

“We’ve said publicly a number of times that our first BB10 handset will be available towards the end of 2012, and that’s still firmly the case,” said Rob Orr, RIM’s VP of product management. “[And] at some point after the launch we’ll bring BB10 to our PlayBooks, yes.”

While the Playbook OS 2.0 is receiving a warm reception among media and users alike, it has done nothing to ensure that there will be a sequel to the tablet itself. With the imminent release of the new iPad and an influx of second-generation Android tablets, the PlayBook is finding new life with its improved software. RIM expects 90% of users to be upgraded to PlayBook OS 2.0 within the first three months.

The upgraded HSPA+ and LTE versions of the Playbook passed through the FCC just yesterday, paving the way for carrier-controlled PlayBooks in the near future. Whether they will find a new place in businesses, or bundled with BlackBerry 7 models for consumers, remains to be seen.
