The third iPad launch is in a few hours, and it is likely going to bring a slew of hardware improvements, both over- and under the hood. But what about software? It was rumoured that the new iPad would coincide with an announcement for iOS 6, but that seems less and less likely.
Instead, Tim Cook is probably going to announce the immediate availability of iOS 5.1, which has been in Gold Master status for three weeks now undergoing extensive testing. The new software build, which was leaked earlier this year, will bring at least two new features: Japanese localized support for Siri, and a new, arguably faster way of accessing the camera from the lock screen. Two more features which have yet to be revealed are also expected to make a showing.
What is sure, though, is that the new version of iOS will nullify the current 5.0.1 jailbreak, so anyone who has done so will have to tread very carefully when thinking of updating to the latest and greatest — we simply don’t know when the next untethered jailbreak will emerge.
