Apple is reportedly planning a significant upgrade of its Apple Intelligence image generation features in iOS 27.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reports that Apple’s Genmoji and Image Playground are getting a “big boost” to their visual quality this year. Genmoji allows users to create AI-generated emoji, while Image Playground supports AI-generated imagery like animations or illustrations.
When these features debuted in iOS 18.2 in December 2024, their visual fidelity was decidedly mixed. Genmoji is generally regarded as fine, but Image Playground has gotten flack for a variety of reasons, including the quality of the images. That said, people have also blasted the feature for its strict content filters and inaccurate likenesses, among other issues. Therefore, pure visual enhancements won’t address every criticism, but it’s a start, at least. iOS 27 will debut at WWDC 2026 next month.
In related news, Gurman’s newsletter also revealed that Apple is working on improved heart rate tracking for the Apple Watch, although the long-gestating AI-powered health coach is likely still a while away.
