A decade after Flappy Bird took the world by storm, the massively popular mobile game is coming back.
First released in 2013, Flappy Bird was a simple but addictive game in which players tap the screen to help navigate a small bird between green pipes in an effort to get a high score. It quickly became a sensation, with tens of millions of downloads.
However, creator Dong Nguyen abruptly removed the game from the App Store in 2014 because he felt it was too addicting and because he disliked the fame and attention he received because of the game’s popularity.
Well, the game is set to return in 2025, according to a new website from the “Flappy Bird Foundation Group,” described as a “team of passionate fans committed to sharing the game with the world.” The group says it acquired the rights to Flappy Bird. However, The Verge reports that the group acquired the rights from Gametech LLC, which isn’t associated with Nguyen, and Nguyen hasn’t yet confirmed whether he’s involved.
Regardless, it looks like the game is set to return on 2025 across various platforms, including iOS, Android and the web. Plus, the website for the project highlights new additions, including multiple characters and new game modes, such as a basketball-themed mode and what looks to be a battle royale mode.
It’ll be interesting to see if the new Flappy Birds will recapture the magic (and popularity) of the original. In the years following the game’s removal, tons of clones popped up, including Google building a Flappy Bird-style easter egg into Android. Some people even sold their old devices with Flappy Bird still installed. Nguyen also teased the return of Flappy Bird many times and released other, similar titles.
