Google is finally bringing to bear a service for Android users that lets them track, signal and, if necessary, wipe clean their devices.

This has been an ongoing concern of Android users for years, as Apple’s ‘Find My Phone’ service is baked into the operating system, and is free for all iCloud users to access. Google’s Android Device Manager, which will be released over the coming weeks and will comprise of a web service and Android app, allows users to sound an alarm on their phone, locate it using the GPS or WiFi chip, and wipe the device clean if it is truly lost.

The app and web service will synchronize using a person’s Google account, and is one step in a long process of Google reassuring their users that should they lose a phone, their documents and photos will not fall into the wrong hands.

Android Device Manager will be compatible with all devices running Android 2.2 Froyo and above.
