Google has once again iterated its Gmail experience on both mobile and the web. The company is beginning to update its Gmail app for iOS and Android with brand new interfaces and some features that will help users better filter through the many types of emails they receive.
Though the changes won’t start rolling out for a few more weeks (though we expect an APK will be made available today or tomorrow), the main thing to note here is that email will begin to be automatically sorted into groups. Such groups or categories will be divided into tabs — on the desktop you’ll see them above your email; on smartphones you’ll see them in the newly-consolidated left-side sliding menu — and can be customized to suit individual needs.
For example, personal email will appear in the main branch, while Social, Promotional and Update-related email will be sorted into colour-coordinated tabs. It looks like these will exist independent of Labels, which are currently used to sort email, but it remains to be seen whether they will be nested or independent.
We’re guessing that the gradual rollout is to ensure there are no game-changing bugs, since alterations to users’ workflows look to be pretty significant. More importantly, the new Gmail version will likely coincide with a new version of Android, as it tends to, which is expected to debut sometime in early June.
