Freedom to start deploying 2500MHz spectrum, promises compatibility for ‘vast majority’ of LTE devices

Freedom Mobile

Following up on its Q4 earnings report, Shaw unveiled plans to expand the build out its wireless network with its recently acquired 2500MHz spectrum.

In July, Shaw purchased seven spectrum licenses from Quebecor for $430 million. The spectrum package included three 700MHz licenses for Southern Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia and four 2500MHz licenses covering Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.

Shaw announced that deployment to enhance its LTE-A network is already underway and subscribers in Western Canada will experience it first with a completion date set for “early December 2017.” The rest of Freedom Mobile’s coverage map is pegged for “early 2018” completion.

Freedom noted that with this network enhancement the “vast majority of existing LTE devices” will become compatible with its network.

On another note, the carrier recently confirmed to MobileSyrup that it intends to officially bring the iPhone to its customers. Unfortunately, no timing was revealed but “availability and pricing will be announced at a future date.”

Freedom Mobile now has 1,147,173 wireless subscribers.
