Ex-BioWare, Dark Slope and Timbre devs form studio focused on ‘friendslop’

Broadcast Games wants to make short-form co-op games that are fun to both play and stream

Broadcast Games new studio

Alums from three Canadian developers have started their own studio, Broadcast Games.

Founded by former members of BioWare Edmonton, Toronto’s Dark Slope and the now-defunct Vancouver-based Timbre Games, Broadcast is a global, remote studio focusing on smaller, chaotic co-op games, often referred to as “friendslop.” Some of the team includes co-founder and president Ken Thain (Dino HabMass Effect), co-founder and CCO Emmalyn Rynard (Dino Hab, Deep: Beyond the Reef) and co-founder and CTO Dimitri Mitchell (Dino Hab).

Broadcast hasn’t revealed its first project yet, but the founders did reveal a focus on producing “short-form cooperative games” that are fun to both watch and stream. In particular, the developers say they were heavily inspired by the recent boom of popular “friendslop” games like Peak and Meccha Chameleon.

“For less than a movie ticket, you can get a few friends together on Friday night and still be playing on Sunday,” said Mitchell in a press statement of the kind of scope they’re targeting. Meanwhile, Rynard also confirmed that the team wants to push back the growing trend of using generative AI in gaming by “putting hands-on creation at the forefront of our development.”

It all sounds promising, and there’s certainly a lot of talent to back it up. For updates on Broadcast Games, you can follow along via the official website, Instagram, X (Twitter) and TikTok.
