YouTube has a new feature called ‘Peak Points,’ part of a new ad format.

It uses Google’s Gemini AI to analyze the YouTube video, pick moments with the highest viewer engagement or that are the most emotionally impactful, and then place an ad.

Peak Points will benefit advertisers because it’s using a tactic that grabs the user’s attention right when they’re most interested in the video they’re watching. However, viewers might find this interruption annoying when engaged in a video and want the ad to end quickly.

However, there is a similar strategy called emotion-based targeting. With this strategy, advertisers place ads in parts of the videos that evoke emotion.

YouTube also has another ad format that lets users shop from a product feed, allowing users to browse and buy items during the ad.

The video platform revealed the new ad format during its Upfront presentation in New York.
