As the Liberal leadership race heats up, front-running candidate Chrystia Freeland is making moves to oppose the upcoming Donald Trump-imposed tariffs and trade threats.
Freeland recently told The Canadian Press that there should be a 100 percent tariff on all U.S. wine, beer, alcohol and Tesla vehicles. She says that Canada needs to target Trump’s closest supporters — by putting tariffs on Tesla, which would put Elon Musk in the crosshairs.
Trump is expected to announce the 25 percent tariffs against Canada and Mexico on Saturday, which will go into effect on March 1st. So far, there has been much speculation regarding how Canada should retaliate, including plans to add tariffs on our lumber and oil exports to the U.S.
While Freeland is trying to hit Trump and Musk close to home, I’m not sure if Tesla cares that much about the Canadian marketplace. A few days ago, the automaker even announced that it was planning on raising prices on all of its cars in conjunction with the tariffs anyway.
