Photos in iOS 12 will ship with improved sharing and search features

Improvements to search, sharing and more

iOS 12 will include a variety of Photos app enhancements, Apple today announced at WWDC 2018.

To start, Apple is improving how the app’s Search functionality works. Moving forward, Photos will suggest search terms when users go to look for specific photos, highlighting important moments and people.

Additionally, users will be able to use more generic terms like ‘museum’ to find specific photos. In conjunction with this improvement, Photos will also categorize events like sporting matches automatically.

Apple is also adding a ‘For You’ section to Photos that is reminiscent of Google Photos’ Assistant section. This part of the app will automatically create new content using the user’s existing photos and videos. For example, the app may add a depth of field affect to a portrait or loop a live photo to turn it into a GIF.

What’s more, the ‘For You’ section will feature improved sharing functionality. After an event, Photos will suggest images and videos the user should share with any friends and family members that may have also been at the event.

Once the user shares their photos, the recipient’s Photos app will do the same to ensure both users have all the photos that were taken at the same event. All of Photos sharing functionality is built on Messages.
