Sony announces developer edition of SmartEyeglass glasses priced at $840 USD

At CES 2015, Sony showed off its SmartEyeglass prototype, which it said wouldn’t go on sale until March. We’re still ploughing through February snow, but Sony has announced that things are still on track for a launch next month.

This morning, the company announced the SmartEyeglass Developer Edition SED-E1, which is the version that will be available for purchase once March rolls around. The date of availability is set for March 15th in 10 countries, though developers and enterprise customers in the UK and Germany can pre-order starting today for $840 USD.

Sony has also offered a little bit more information on the technology powering the SmartEyeglass. The company explained at CES that the glasses would connect to your smartphone and superimpose information from your phone onto your field of view without any obstruction. Today’s blog post explained that the glasses will do this via holographic waveguide technology that will allow for 3.0 mm AR lenses with a transparency of 85%. The 77g package also boasts a 3MP CMOS sensor, an accelerometer, gyro, compass, mic, brightness sensor, and Bluetooth 3.0.

Sony is targeting enterprise with these glasses, billing it as a hands-free tool that will help the user “stay focused and involved.” Enterprise customers in France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands and Sweden will be able to purchase SmartEyeglass in March. Developers in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany will be able to purchase SmartEyeglass from next month and the first official version of the SmartEyeglass SDK is being made available for developers today. No word on general consumer availability just yet.
