Facebook has been experimenting with an updated layout in its Android app for some time, but it seems to be close to becoming public. The company has been “flipping the switch” on an increasing number of users participating in its Android beta (though I and most of my peers have yet to receive it).
An update to the stable channel today brings numerous improvements to photo management, including the ability to upload multiple images to the same album, the ability to delete photos from an album, and edit photo albums as a whole. Another useful feature is the ability to use a photo as a comment, adding to the propagation of memes-as-comment that first appeared on Facebook’s web interface.
While the app is still clunky and slow, and hasn’t yet done away with legacy features like a Gingerbread-era menu overlay for devices with capacitive buttons, Facebook has managed to improve the speed of its Android app considerably over the past year. Not only is scrolling much smoother than it used to be but various elements that previously had to be offloaded to a mobile web page can now be accessed and changed within the app itself.
