Apple’s latest iPhone 15 series is facing lukewarm reception in China, where major online retailers are slashing the series’ devices’ prices by up to 1,501 yuan (roughly $280 CAD) to attract buyers.
As shared by Reuters, via iPhoneInCanada, the iPhone 15 series is selling worse than its predecessor in China. Counterpoint Research data shows that iPhone 15 sales in the country were down by 4.5 percent versus the iPhone 14 in the first 17 days after its market launch.
According to iPhoneInCanada, some of the biggest e-commerce platforms in China, such as JD.com, Pinduoduo, and Alibaba’s Taobao, are offering steep discounts on various models of the iPhone 15 series.
Apple sometimes allows its Chinese partners to offer discounts on its products to boost sales. However, in Canada and the U.S., prices remain largely the same until Apple launches a new generation of devices.
For reference, Pinduoduo is currently offering the 128GB version of the iPhone 15 Plus for 6,099 yuan ($1,163.35 CAD), which is 900 yuan ( $171.67 CAD) less than Apple’s retail pricing of 6,999 yuan ($1,309.68 CAD).
Similarly, Alibaba’s e-commerce platform Taobao is offering the 512GB iPhone 15 Pro Max for 10,698 yuan ($2,000 CAD), while the device’s retail price in China is 11,999 yuan ($2,245.08 CAD).
The iPhone 15 series has suffered numerous bugs since its release, which might explain its lower demand. However, it is also being speculated, via Bloomberg, that “Huawei’s rising prominence could erode Apple’s dominance of the higher end of the market,” at least in China.
Whether these discounts make their way to Canada is unlikely, and yet to be seen.
