Alcatel launches new Idol 4 and 4S smartphones

At Mobile World Congress, it’s easy to overlook smaller smartphone manufacturers when attention is focused on both Samsung and LG. Ahead of MWC this week, up and coming OEM Alcatel has revealed the company is releasing two new devices in its well-received Idol series.

The two phones in the lineup, the Idol 4 and Idol 4S, come in at 5.2 and 5.5 inches respectively. The Idol 4S features slightly better technical specifications in almost all categories, including a QHD 1440 x 2560 pixel AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor, 16 megapixel camera, 32GB of storage, comes with J22 JBL headphones, and a 3000 mAh battery.

The Idol 4 features an FHD 1080 x 1920 pixel IPS screen, Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor, 13 megapixel camera, 16 GB of storage, and a 2610 mAh battery. The phones will be available in Gold, Dark Gray, Rose Gold, and Metal Silver, and come in at 6.9 mm for the Idol 4S and 7.1 mm for the Idol 4.

In addition to being a powerful phone, the Idol 4S also doubles as a VR headset, with the packaging transforming into a pair of goggles. Compatible 360 video content and virtual reality games can be found in the Onetouch VR Store app.

We don’t currently have a timeframe for release in Canada, but will update this story when we learn more.
