Samsung Galaxy S6 to emphasize megapixel quantity in renewed camera focus

With Mobile World Congress just a few weeks away, major manufacturers are starting to ramp up publicity for the various different devices they plan to announce early next month. The tricky part is not revealing too much information. They don’t want to spoil the surprise but they want to maintain the trickle of information to build anticipation.

This morning, Samsung was teasing us about cameras, and what we can expect from the cameras in company’s devices going forward. In a blog post published over on Samsung Tomorrow, the head of Samsung’s camera R&D group, Dong Hoon Jang, revealed that Samsung will be focusing on the front-facing camera next. Though he stopped short of revealing what we can expect from the Galaxy S6 camera, Jang did say the 2015 flagship Galaxy will benefit from the same “passion and dedication” we’ve seen in the company’s previous phones. This commitment followed references to the growing selfie trend and the newly launched Galaxy A series, which features a 5MP camera up front.

“We meticulously evaluate every single facet of our smartphone cameras by taking over 10,000 photos in every imaginable lighting environment for analysis. The same passion and dedication has been put into building the cameras for the release of our 2015 flagship model,” he said. “It will be intelligent and do all the thinking for users, allowing them to take amazing pictures under any conditions, without having to worry about anything more than just pressing the shutter button.”

At this point, a five megapixel camera on the Galaxy S6 wouldn’t exactly be surprising. It’s almost expected. Like Jang said, the company has already put a 5MP sensor in the A7, A5 and A3. However, 2014 saw multiple smartphone manufacturers push “selfie phones” or phones with “selfie cameras.” HTC, Alcatel OneTouch, Xiaomi, Microsoft, Sony and many others have released phones with 5MP front-facing cameras in the last year or so, making the 2MP camera on the Galaxy S5 look a little puny in comparison.

The company also talked about how it has made “progress” with each version of the Galaxy S series by pushing the megapixel count higher. This runs in contrast to Apple’s strategy of increasing the number of pixels static while improving the overall size of each one. Rumour has it that Samsung will stick a 20MP shooter on the Galaxy S6, so it’s clear the company believes that the best smartphone camera experience is a higher pixel count, regardless of whether that’s true or not. However, it’s hard to argue with the fact that the average consumer relates more to the number of pixels more than they do the quality of those pixels.
