Apple is currently piloting an AI-powered note-taking feature at Apple Store Genius Bars, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
Per the publication, this “Live Notes” feature, which is being tested at some stores, will transcribe and summarize conversations with customers. Apple’s goal with the feature is to save employees time so they can focus more on the customer.
It’s unclear exactly how widespread the testing is or whether Apple has plans to expand it, but Bloomberg did note that it will be opt-in by both employee and customer. The outlet adds that some Apple employees are concerned that recordings could eventually be used for coaching or performance review purposes. However, it says that Apple has told employees that recordings won’t be saved and managers won’t receive transcripts.
In general, though, it’s probably best that big tech companies don’t have AI-powered recordings of your voice. And as Bloomberg notes, there’s no guarantee that Live Notes — which is only in early testing — won’t lead to heavier uses of AI in the workplace.
News of these Genius Bar AI tests come as part of Gurman’s larger story for Bloomberg about Apple’s major lawsuit against OpenAI alleging that the company has been poaching its talent and using their knowledge to develop various hardware, including a smart speaker.
