Microsoft is reportedly preparing to introduce an ad-enabled tier for its Xbox Cloud Gaming service.
Last week, Xbox Cloud Gaming users noticed a message that read “1 hour of ad-supported play time per session.” The Verge‘s Tom Warren shared an image of the message on X (Twitter).

While there was some confusion about whether this meant ads were coming across the entire service, Windows Central clarified with sources that it was actually sent in error.
That said, the outlet noted that Microsoft is indeed working on an ad tier as an additional option to access Xbox Cloud Gaming. Currently, the company requires you to subscribe to one of the three Xbox Game Pass tiers to stream games. However, Windows Central reports that this latest option will allow Xbox users who aren’t subscribed to Game Pass to stream games they own. The publication says Microsoft is planning to launch this feature sometime later this year.
As it stands, it’s unclear exactly how often ads would run during one hour, as well as how often you could access the free sessions. Nvidia GeForce Now, which offers its own one-hour ad-supported tier, doesn’t have any limit to how many new sessions you can start in a day. That said, premium memberships remove ads while providing access to hundreds of additional games.
Either way, it makes sense for Microsoft to want to expand Xbox Cloud Gaming through a free ad tier. While the company has long been quiet about the number of Game Pass subscribers, it did confirm in November that cloud gaming hours in 2025 were up 45 per cent year-over-year. Naturally, then, providing a way to access the service beyond the Game Pass subscription paywall would, in theory, only further drive growth.
