Apple TV is getting a TV app, the company announced at its October 27th Mac unveiling event.
The app will provide an unified TV experience, said Apple CEO Tim Cook, helping users see the shows and movies available across a variety of disparate apps in one place — effectively creating a personal Netflix platform of sorts.
When the user selects the content they’d like to watch, the app then sends them to where the content comes from. If the user presses the back button they will be returned to the home page of the individual app, but pressing the TV button on their Apple TV remote will bring them back to the TV app.
The app will also work with iOS devices, says the company, and should arrive by the end of this year in the U.S. via a free update.
One major upside to the app is that when users install a new app, it’ll instantly sign users in with a unified log-in feature.
In addition to the announcement of the TV app, Apple launched the ability for Siri to tune into live streaming content and control third-party streaming apps. The live tune-in feature is available now, according to the company.
During the event, Tim Cook also announced that Apple TV now offers over 8,000 apps and 2,000 games. Minecraft, announced Cook, is coming to Apple TV by the end of the year.
The TV app will be available in the U.S. by the end of the year.
