While navigation apps like Google Maps do a great job of warning users of upcoming congestion, no app in the field integrates community reporting quite like Waze.
The app’s more than 65-million monthly active users use Waze to share information about traffic annoyances like construction and speed traps on a daily basis.
Waze is taking that functionality to a new level this week.
The Google-owned company announced today the launch of a new initiative called the Waze Global Event Partner Program. Stadiums, marathons and other event organizers can now add road closures to Waze’s crowdsourced map, as well as use the app to share road information like turn restrictions and lane reversals ahead of an event.
What’s more, those same event organizers can embed an online version of Waze’s map on their website, allowing even those without access to the app to take a look at its information.
The initiative is launching with 20 inaugural partners across the world, including the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, which hosts annual marathons in Montreal and Vancouver.
