OnePlus co-founder says the company was working on a smartwatch before abandoning it

Thanks to its strange and often perplexing marketing efforts, it’s easy to question the leadership behind OnePlus. After all, this is the same team that rubber-stamped the company’s infamous selfie campaign, but for all its faults, the company does have a knack for creating interesting products. It also looks like OnePlus knows when to shelve a product.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal on smartphone market saturation, OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau admitted OnePlus shelved a smartwatch it was working on. “We had completed the design but we still decided to scrap it,” he said. Lau didn’t go on to say why OnePlus made the decision to ultimately scrap the device, but with most people not exactly enamoured with the idea of wearables, it was likely a good decision.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that OnePlus was working on a smartwatch. Back in 2014, photos of the device reportedly leaked.

OnePlus is set to announce its latest smartphone, the OnePlus 3, on June 14. The phone is expected to include a 5.5-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 820 processor, between 4GB and 6GB of internal storage and a 16 megapixel camera. What’s more, unlike in past years, consumers won’t need to jump through hoops to get their hands to on the phone, as OnePlus has done away with the invite system that characterized its past launches.
