Twitter has purchased Fastlane, a development platform designed to help app creators test and update iOS applications.
It’s expected Fastlane will be integrated into Twitter’s “Fabric,” a set of services designed to make it easier for developers to create and test mobile applications. At Twitter Flight, the company’s annual developer conference, Twitter revealed that payment platform Stripe, as well as Amazon’s Web Services Cloud, will also be integrated into Fabric.
“In just a short time, Fastlane became the most popular iOS automisation toolset, used by thousands of developers around the world,” said Krause, Fastlane’s creator and only employee, in a recent blog post.
In the weeks since his company has been acquired by Twitter, Krause has added two new major features to Fastlane: a tool called Scan that makes testing automatic for app developers, and Android support, a feature that’s still currently in beta testing.
At Twitter Flight, the platform’s co-founder and newly reinstated CEO, Jack Dorsey, explained he believes Twitter made a monumental mistake when it made the decision to shut out developers from Twitter in 2012.
“Somewhere along the line, our relationship with developers got a little bit complicated, a little bit confusing, a little bit unpredictable,” said Dorsey during the press conference.
Since taking the helm of Twitter, Dorsey has repeatedly stated he wants the social networks development API to become significantly more open and less exclusive, and that he plans to encourage third-party developers to work more closely with Twitter.
