Asus ZenFone 2 update fixes Stagefright bug, remains on Android 5.0

As most phones are being updated to Android 5.1 and beyond, Asus is keeping its current flagship on a much older version.

The company launched the ZenFone 2 back in May, unlocked beginning at $249 CAD, running Android 5.0 with the company’s ZenUI on top.

Over the weekend, Asus began rolling out a significant update that, while remaining on Android 5.0’s base code, fixes a number of important bugs, including the well-documented Stagefright exploit, while improving performance in a number of ways.

Specifically, the update adds a new feature called Hands Up, which automatically answers a phone call when the device is held to one’s ear.

Also included in the new build is a Mobile Manager app, allowing users to better cover and control their data usage. Rounding things out are myriad bug fixes that reportedly clear up many of the issues users were having with performance and app stability.

Hopefully this is the first of many such updates for the Asus ZenFone 2, which just this morning received a tablet counterpart.

To update your ZenFone 2, head to Settings, About, System update.
