The HTC Flyer was a decent 7-inch tablet for its day but the company gave up on it pretty quickly. Considering it sported a $499 price tag without the all-important capacitive stylus, and debuted with a tabletized (read: awkward) build of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, we were never surprised it didn’t quite live up to expectations.
But HTC, that comeback kid, is not done with the brand just yet. According to a rumour at PhoneArena, the Flyer 2 will be cheaper, lighter, thinner, way faster and, above all, run a build of Android that was meant for tablets. According to the leak, the Flyer successor will be made of a single piece of anodized aluminum and be around 7.1mm thin, quite a feat in this age of disappearing tablet waistlines.
With a screen resolution of 1280×768, we’re looking at a form factor similar in size and sharpness to the Nexus 7, but much thinner and more solid. The device is also expected to have a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, one of the fastest and battery-friendly chips currently available. Running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Flyer 2 will have two cameras — a 1MP front shooter and 3MP rear — but there’s no word on whether the tablet will have support for the company’s admittedly excellent stylus.
HTC is holding an event on Wednesday, September 19th and we’ll be there to cover it. If the Flyer 2 is announced at that point, you can expect a world of preview.
