Unexpected: Steven Spielberg loves Call of Duty and hates controllers

Spielberg PC games

Steven Spielberg might be a billionaire director behind many of the most beloved films of all time, but he’s also just like us. As it turns out, he’s a big PC gamer and Call of Duty fan.

Speaking to Minnmax, the legendary filmmaker’s son, Max Spielberg, talked about his father’s gaming habits. In particular, Max says he’s tried to get his dad to play Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series because Steven loves story games and Uncharted is heavily inspired by his Indiana Jones films. “But he’s like, ‘I can’t do controllers. I can only do keyboard and mouse,'” explained Max.

Given that Spielberg is nearly 80 with a still-busy film career, it’s understandable that he’s not looking to get accustomed to a controller at this point in his life. It’s worth noting that Uncharted: The Legacy of Thieves Collection is available natively on PC with mouse and keyboard support, but it does only include Uncharted 4 and its The Lost Legacy expansion, so it would hardly be a good entry point for the Saving Private Ryan director.

But while the elder Spielberg might not be about that console life, Max says his dad “loves gaming.” Admittedly, Spielberg’s admiration for the medium is no secret, as he’s previously talked about enjoying the likes of classic LucasArts titles and Halo shooters and even worked with EA on a number of games, including serving as the creator of the publisher’s Medal of Honor series.

However, it’s nice to hear that Spielberg still enjoys games even at this point in his life — and something as mainstream as Call of Duty, no less. In the Minnmax interview, Max even noted that games have served as a “bonding point” between him and his father and helped him become a game developer. He’s currently the co-founder and creative director at the Los Angeles-based FuzzyBot Games, which is working on the action roguelike game Lynked: Banner of the Spark.

“He’s like, ‘Hey, what’s good? What Call of Duty should I be playing? Send me a list of the top five shooters and I’ll get them downloaded, then we can play them together when you come over to the house,'” said Max of his gaming discussions with his father.

Unfortunately, Max only mentioned that his dad plays the “story campaigns” of Call of Duty, so it’s unclear if he’s ever actually playing online. My head canon is that he’s actually one of the sweatiest players in any given match and likes to 1v1 people on Rust — really, what better way would be there to unwind from the trials and tribulations of Hollywood?

Spielberg’s most recent film was 2022’s The Fabelmans, a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama starring Vancouver’s own Gabriel LaBelle as the director’s stand-in character, Sammy. The Oscar winner is also set to direct a new film about UFOs that will be penned by his Jurassic Park writer, David Koepp. No other details have been confirmed, but the film is set to hit theatres in summer 2026.
