Ontario police force looking to implement first response drones

One of, if not the first, to use this technology in such capacity

Peel Region Police are looking to start deploying first response drones for specific 911 calls.

In a statement to Global News on August 7, Deputy Chief Anthony Odoardi explained that the goal of this initiative was to “reduce response times and provide officers with real-time information before they arrive.”

Odoardi went on to specify that although the types of calls that would see this new initiative were still being finalized, he listed break-and-enter, auto thefts, and missing persons as possible options. He added that the initiative was still in the “planning and regulatory review phase,” with a limited test planned for the future that will assess the initiative’s operational value, cost, and impact on the community.

This new initiative comes after the growing police use of drones across the country and the recorded impacts that police drones have had in many different cases.

Odoardi concludes by reassuring any who may be concerned that the drones wouldn’t be used outside of their intended purposes, specifying that they wouldn’t engage in general surveillance or utilize facial recognition technology.
